Smart card technology is a specific type of access control. Access control is the business of granting and denying permission for security reasons, while biometric technology focuses on the human characteristics used for identification purposes. Smart card technology is slightly different from biometric access control, as it does not involve a human print of any sort; rather a “smart card” which can be swiped and positively identified.
Smart card technology refers to any type of pocket-sized card that contains embedded circuits. These circuits process input and output by way of the ICC application.
